Q: What is a solar home lighting system?

A:  A solar home lighting system is a fixed installation that generates electricity from solar energy for domestic and industrial use. It is used in remote off-grid locations. People living in cities connected via the grid also install SHLS for reap benefits of free electricity and environment protection

Q: How does a solar home lighting system work?

A:  A SHLS comprises of a solar panel that converts solar energy into electricity and stores it in a battery. When semiconducting materials like silicon are exposed to sunlight, they release small amounts of electricity. This is known as the photoelectric effect. It is the basic physical process in which a solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) cell converts sunlight to electricity. The electricity stored in a batter is used to light led bulbs & run fans, television, air conditioner, etc.  A basic SHLS can light upto 3 LED bulbs, run a DC Fan and charge a mobile phone. A bigger SHLS is required to run electronics like air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, etc.

Q: How to operate a Solar Home Lighting System?

A:   Led Bulbs and Fan that come along with AVRO SHLS –This can be operated manually with switches and refer to the User Manual which is with every SHLS sold to the customer.​

Q: What is photovoltaic (solar electricity) or “PV”?

A:   The word photovoltaic is derived from two Greek words phos – meaning light and volt – meaning electricity. Photovoltaic therefore means light electricity. Solar radiation is converted into direct current electricity by using semiconductors. Photovoltaic power generation employs solar panels composed of a number of solar cells containing a photovoltaic material.

Q: What is AC and DC system?

A:    Here in India the normal power that is available from grid is of 230V AC (Alternating Current) and our solar home lighting system works on 12.0 V DC. The accessories like Bulbs, Fan TV etc that works on AC cannot be directly run using DC and vice versa

Q: What are the components of a Solar Home Lighting System?

A:    Our Solar Home Lighting System - is made up of different components. These include PV modules (group of PV cells) which are commonly called PV panels; one or more batteries depending on the size and use of the solar home lighting system, a charge controller. Our SHLS also comes with accessories like LED bulbs, DC Fan, Cables etc

Q: Where can we use Solar Home lighting system?

A:  Our Solar home lighting system – can be used anywhere where we need light. It is a source of clean energy and can be used at rural areas, remote villages, camping, hospitals, etc. The solar lighting system can be used indoors and outdoors.

Q: How much light does a solar lamp provide?

A:  In a solar home lighting system, lamps used are LED Lamps ( Light Emitting Diode Lamp ). It consumes 80 - 90 % less energy than ordinary incandescent bulbs. The light output can be of 2, 3 & 5 watts LED can be compared to 15, 30 and 50 watts ordinary bulb respectively.

Q: How effective is a solar home lighting system during rains and winter?

A:  Solar home lighting system generates electricity in cloudy weather although their output is reduced. Solar PV needs only sunlight not the heat of the sun, therefore the system even can work in rainy season i.e. in diffused light conditions. Hence the solar lighting system works almost throughout the year.

Q: Can we operate television, refrigerator, fan etc. on solar lighting system?

A:  Yes, a solar home lighting system can operate any electrical gadget that works on DC. However, these appliances consume more power due to their high wattage and require solar modules and batteries of higher ratings.

Q: What is the maintenance required for a solar lighting system?

A:  AVRO Solar Home Lighting System comes with maintenance free batteries. However, regular cleaning/ dusting of the module is required as per the instructions given by the installer at the time of installation

Q: What are the advantages of solar lighting system?

A: There are various advantages of solar photovoltaic technology as follows:
   1. Dependence on conventional electric supply like grid, kerosene, gas etc is reduced. You can enjoy the benefits of electric supply generated by solar throughout the year.
   2. Electricity can be generate and consumed in remote off-grid locations as Solar energy is available in abundance and for free.
   3. Solar lighting system works on a low voltage of 12.0 DC, rendering it a much safer than 220V Ac supply voltage.
   4. Solar electricity saves the conventional fuels & reduces the environmental pollution. 
   5. Very easy to install & operate.

Q: What is the life of a solar home lighting system?

A:  A properly installed and well maintained solar home lighting system typically operates for 20 years. On an average, the panel degrades by 1% each year. After 20 years, the panels will produce at least 80% of the rated power. Life of the LED Bulb is around 50 thousand hours of use. Proper installation, regular maintenance and proper use ensures the solar home lighting system will function efficiently and without problems. The battery life is another aspect to look on the life of the SHLS. AVRO SOLAR provides a minimum of 2 years of warranty

Q:Q: How do I know which Solar Home Lighting System best suits my needs? / Can I customize the Solar Home Lighting System to best suit my needs?

A:  The size and configuration of a Solar Home Lighting System depends on the use of electricity generate by the system. A small and compact solar home system is ideal to light 3-4 bulbs, a DC fan and mobile charging. Q: The Red lamp is glowing and what does it mean.

A:  The red lamp indicates that the battery has discharged and needs immediate charging.

Q: The lamp is OFF and unable to switch ON.

A: Check the Low battery indication. If the battery indication is showing Red with a Continuous blink, the light needs to be charged immediately with the Solar panel or mains charger.

Q: The lamp is not charging although the solar panel is connected to the Solar Home light system.

A:  a. Check the direction, angle of installation and cable of solar panel to ensure perfect charging of the Battery. Please refer to user manual for the solar panel installation instructions.
b. Observe the charging indication on the SHLS. The lamp should show GREEN while charging the battery.
c. Measure the internal battery voltage using a multimeter. If the battery is Charged the voltage should be approx. should be lesser 10.8 V (DC)..

Q. What needs to be done when the SHLS has a less back up or runtime? When the light lasts for few hours?

A: a. The back up or run time is also reduced if the battery is not properly charged using a charging source. b. If the back up or runtime is low it means that the battery lifetime is about to expire. Please change the battery with the new one.

Q. Do we get replacement spare parts for the SHLS?

A: The replacement spare parts are available with any of AVRO SOLAR partners, resellers, local dealers and distributors.

Q. How much rooftop space do I need?

A: Most of the solar panels are installed on rooftop. However, in some cases they can also be mounted on ground. You would need a shadow-free area of approx. 12sqmtr/kwp to accommodate solar panels. Please make sure that the area gets maximum sun light.

Q. For how long will I be able to run my connected appliance on solar? How much electricity will it generate?

A: An offgrid 1KWp solar system can provide an average of 4 units (AC energy) electricity per day. While a grid tie system can provide an average 5 units per day.
